MayDay Ovalfest - Sunday Review
On Sunday, headline act were the National Hot Rods for round 13 of their World Series. In a wet first heat, Gary Woolsey showed real class to scythe through from the back for the win, before the rest of the day belonged to Keith Martin. The former World and European Champion enjoyed a return to form with victories in the second heat and final.

Tony Loftus once again was the class of the Lightning Rods, despite his rise to the blue grade. After Jason Devlin had taken the first heat, Loftus steered his ex-Emerson car to a brace of wins including the final. In the Saloon Stock Cars, there were heat wins for Ryan Wright and a maiden victory for Tommy McCrory Jnr, before normal service was resumed when star man Andy Stewart grabbed the superb Ovalfest trophy in the final.
In the Group 2 Lightning Rods, James Goldie was a double heat winner in the budget class, before Stewart Nicholl powered his Peugeot through to the win in the final. The Junior Rods followed a similar pattern, with Dean McCrory bagging both heats before Sean McFerran stole through to win the final in his excellently turned out Corsa.

Dalgarno Takes Epic Shamwreck
After yet another outstanding Shamwreck meeting, viewed by many as the best yet, Scottish driver Mark Dalgarno broke The Bears’ stranglehold on the event with a superb heat and final double. Hopes of a local win were high when Team Buckle’s Kieran McIvor took the first heat, before Dalgarno bagged the second one for team Extreme, avoiding the carnage that was being handed out all around the track. McIvor held the lead in the feature event too, only to become involved with some Bears and get taken out. Dalgarno accepted the lead in his Supra, and held on for a fine win from Bears Michael Woodward and Neil Osborne. The action in this one was unreal at times, with Nutty Nigel Riley and Matty Threlkeld exchanging some massive blows in their Yanks.

Osborne took the flag in the Allcomers Dash for Cash, before Woodward took a very eventful DD which saw Nige and Matty back in the thick of things yet again. For their wonderful efforts on the day, and to keep returning their cars for more punishment, Nige took the Entertainer of the Day award, with Matty the Best Presented Car. All in all another fantastic days’ entertainment in front of a capacity crowd.

The non-contact classes provided excellent support action, with Randalstown’s Glenn McDowell taking the feature race win in the 2.0 Hot Rods, which were setting a breathtaking pace. Earlier, Philip Beatty and Leigh Nicholl had shared the heats, before McDowell took the silverware. Irish Champion Shane Murray took second on the road, but was docked for contact handing the place to David McMenemy.

Having only joined the Lightning Rods this season in an ex-Stephen Emerson machine, Tony Loftus romped home to a heat and final double in the Sierra’s. Fellow yellow grader Tim Hazlett claimed the other heat win, before Kenny Robinson, Gordy McKee and Jason Devlin chased Loftus over the line in the final.

Christie At The Double
John Chrstie was in fine form during Round 11 of the National Hot Rods World Series at Nuttscorner Oval on April 17th. From a disappointing entry, John fought past the determined Tommy Maxwell on the outside to claim the Beggs Deliveries final win, after earlier taking the same route to victory in heat one. It could have been a hat-trick for the Crumlin ace, but an early finish to heat two when the Glen Bell machine caught fire scuppered his chance of the full house, leaving Maxwell to claim the win in that one.

The 2.0 Hot Rods produced another excellent turnout, with Glenn McDowell enjoying a welcome return to victory lane in the first heat, which saw a lot of fluid put down and numerous spins. Philip Beatty continued the blue grade domination in heat two, leading home Leigh Nicholl, before David McMenemy grabbed the spoils in the final after an excellent drive. White grader Nigel McCauley had his best result to date with fine second, ahead of John Murray and the impressive Gary Wilson.

For the second week in a row Kyle Hill was the final winner in the Junior Productions, after also bagging the victory in the first heat as well. With his father, engine guru Trevor Hill, and his Uncle, British Stock Rod Champion Frankie Lynn, looking after the car it was always going to be quick, and the Ballymena teenager is making a great start to his career at Nuttscorner. Heat two winner Johnny Armstrong, another excellent recent newcomer, followed Kyle home in the feature race ahead of Ben McCully and Daniel Campbell.

The ProStocks were back in their usual big numbers, and with driving standards greatly improved they put on three excellent races. Ryan Magee took the flag in heat one, but was later docked a number of places for starting out of position, which handed the win to Alan Haugh, who later went on to win heat two as well. An instant upgrade to yellow didn’t hinder Alan and he soon grabbed the lead in the final, but ‘The Borger Man’ Robert Preston soon slipped past to record his first final win, with Magee in second and Haugh third.

Many thanks to our meeting sponsor, Beggs Deliveries.

Super Start To 2010 Continues at Nuttscorner Oval
Glorious sunshine, excellent car turnouts once again and superb racing – it most definitely was yet another quality race meeting, sponsored by LMC Trade Sales, at Nuttscorner Oval on Saturday night, April 10th. The 2.0 Hot Rods topped the bill, and from a 25 car turnout it was a blue grade rout. Veteran campaigner Alvin Doak made his seasonal debut and promptly took the heat one win, before former World Champion John Murray took the flag in heat two to continue his fine start to 2010. The final developed into an exciting race, with Feargal McNally holding off Irish Champion Shane Murray at the line for a quality win. Leigh Nicholl must get a mention too, having led the final for some distance before mechanical gremlins intervened.

The Lightning Rods were in top form as well, and with 23 in action it was always going to be a crowded raceway. That didn’t bother young Tim Hazlett though, who easily swept to victory in both heats from the white grade. Even a move up to yellow grade didn’t look likely to stop him grabbing a hat-trick, but mechanical troubles did, allowing Francis Rafferty to hold off the star grade quartet of Gordon McKee, David Hearst, Stephen Emerson and Aaron Stewart in a blanket finish to the final.
Johnny Armstrong took the flag in both Junior Production heats, earning him a rise to yellow grade for the final too. He was soon onto the tail of leader Kyle Hill anyhow, but Kyle showed great racecraft to hold him off through the heavy backmarking traffic to claim a controlled win in his Corsa. The Junior Productions have a healthy bunch of novices for 2010, and they will soon be taking the fight to the big guns on a regular basis.
Portadown’s Rab Stewart took a heat and final brace in the Reliant Robins, with Irish Champ Ian Bolton netting the other win. The 3-wheelers were down in numbers for various reasons, but we should have the fun machines back into double figures at their next meeting. A number of race ready Robins are available; all that is required is a willingness to participate on a regular basis. Contact Davy McCall or Darren Black for more details (see our Contact Us page)

Bell Takes Nationals Glory at Storming Season Opener
Portadown’s Glenn Bell grabbed the glory when he won his second National Hot Rod World Qualifying final in 4 days at Nuttscorner Oval on Easter Monday. This time the rods enjoyed a bone dry track and produced excellent side by side racing all afternoon. John Christie made up for his disastrous Good Friday meeting by grabbing the heat one win, before Tommy Maxwell took the spoils in heat two. Maxwell held the early lead in the final too, with NI Champion Stewart Doak braving the outside line for many laps before the two clashed leaving the door open for Bell to speed through for the win.

The other classes were all about the massive entries, with 28 2.0 Hot rods providing breathtaking action throughout the day. Champions Wayne Woolsey, Andy Best and Shane Murray battled hard from the back for scant reward, as the lower graders dominated. Dungannon’s David McMenemy steered his ex-Andy Lane Corsa to both heat wins, which gained him an automatic upgrade to blue roof, leaving Vince Campbell to claim a surprising and popular win in the final.

Antrim’s Stephen Emerson had all eyes on him as he returned from suspension in the Lightning Rods, which pleasingly posted an entry into the twenties. Emerson duly delivered in heat one, taking a storming win from the back, just pipping Tim Hazlett in the final stages. Hazlett held on for the heat two victory before red grader Gordon McKee took an excellent and deserved win in the final.

The Junior Productions also broke the 20-car barrier, with a pleasing number of newcomers in action. There were white grade wins in the heats for Johnny Armstrong and Kyle Hill, but when the trophy was at stake in the feature final, Irish Champion Derek McMillan made no mistake by storming through from the back for the win.

The ProStocks served up a frantic and fraught afternoon’s entertainment, with the 30 plus car field providing incidents galore. Some drivers were very over-enthusiastic regarding the contact side of things, which the promoters hope to address in the coming weeks. Willie Stewart was the man on form during the heats, taking both victories, before his instant upgrading to red grade for the final opened the door for Alan Haugh to grab the final win, after holding off Stewart and Irish Champion Dave Morrison to the flag.

The meeting was kindly sponsored by Bryan Hynds Services of Portadown
