Ferry Lifts King of Nuttscorner Crown |
Bushmills driver Dane Ferry was a worthy if surprise winner of Sunday’s King of Nuttscorner title for the Lightning Rods, sponsored by MkII Escort Shells and Spares. Since joining the oval scene just over a year ago, Ferry has rapidly risen through the ranks and has also qualified comfortably for July’s World Championship. He got off to an excellent start by winning the first of the reverse grid heats from pole position, before returning to fourth in the second to net pole position; it was won by World title holder Stephen Emerson. After a neck and neck start to the final, which saw the front rows circulate as one for a while, Ferry broke clear, and his cause was helped when Ben McKee retired and Emerson and Gordy McKee tripped over each other. Ferry came home to take the title, with Martin O’Flaherty getting second and Emerson recovering for third. |

Having watched his Uncle Mark take the final victory last week in the 2.0 Hot Rods, Adam Heatrick repeated the feat for the family with a controlled drive to the chequered flag, as Adam Hylands and Davy Clarke closed in nearing the end. Clarke earlier inherited the win in the first heat after on-the-road victor Wayne McClure lost all his positions for the day after failing the post-meeting weight checks. Glen Hetherington took the other heat win.
Another famous name on the Ulster oval scene hit the top of the Junior Productions leaderboard for the first time on Sunday, when Bradley McKinstry, son of former F2 star Darren McKinstry, took an excellent heat and final double for his first ever wins in the class. In the final he held off Kyle Hill and Derek McMillan to the flag, with the other heat falling to another rising star, Fionn Donnelly.
For a number of reasons the ProStocks were well down in numbers, but still put on an excellent show. Ryan Abernethy took heat one in his Tigra, now blue graded of course, and looked set to take the second before a puncture handed the initiative and the win to Richard Harper. Irish Champion Dave Morrison was the man to beat come final time though, scything though to the trophy ahead of Harper and Ryan Stewart.
The meeting was kindly sponsored by Raymond Bradley of MkII Escort Shells and Spares, Kilrea. Tel: 07703 004696.

Heatrick Claims First 2.0 Hot Rod Final |
National Hot Rod star man Mark Heatrick picked up his first 2.0 Hot Rod final win when he took the flag in the Truffles Restaurant and Guest House sponsored feature race at the meeting on Friday May 14th. Having been fortunate enough to draw pole position in the blue grade, Heatrick stormed into the early lead and was never headed, despite the best efforts of former British Champion Garry Campbell, who spent many laps trying to wrestle his Corsa by on the outside line. Heatrick held on for the win from Derek Martin and Davy Clarke. Earlier, the heats saw a welcome return to the podium for Adam Hylands in heat one, before Clarke took heat two where Wayne McClure set a new lap record for the class, no doubt helped by the switch to the new soft compound of Hoosier tyres. |

The Lightning Rods were contesting the penultimate round of their World Qualifying Series, and National Champion David Hearst returned to form to card the first win of the night, with Ricky Shaw , another who’s been off the boil in 2010, taking heat two. The final was all about a titanic battle between Jason Devlin and World Champion Stephen Emerson, with Devlin holding on despite Emerson’s attempts on the outside and numerous blue flags for Jason. Emerson held on for second from Andy Cochrane.
Lee McCracken picked up where he left off by winning the first Junior Production heat from Jack Gilpin, before young Shane McMillan brought the house down with a superb win in heat two – his first ever victory – after holding off brother Derek to the flag. Jordan Rochford then picked up his first final victory of the season, stamping his authority on the race from the blue grade to hold off Derek McMillan and McCracken at the chequers.
The Reliant Robins again entertained the fans, and following sterling work by the promotion there was a much improved turnout of 11 of the 3-wheelers. Jimmy Beattie made short work of it though with a straight hat-trick of victories from the red grade, including the final which saw a double rollover for Bevan brother and sister Darren and Haley. Haley in fact caught as much air as has ever been seen at Nuttscorner, somersaulting through the sunset in a momentous roll. With the promise of even more cars for their next meeting, the Robins will continue to provide the novelty value in the months to come.

With the two World Championship qualifying series' heading towards a dramatic conclusion, competition is really hotting up for places on the grids for both classes at Ipswich in early July. Wayne McClure has moved ahead in the 2.0 Hot Rods chart, no doubt helped by Wayne Woolsey's non-attendance at the last meeting. Derek Martin is only 2 points off the pace with Shane Murray in third.
In the Lightning Rods, Brendan McConnell's recent absence has seen his lead cut right back, with David Hearst and Mervyn Emerson now within touching distance. Both series finish on Saturday 29th May.

MayDay Ovalfest - Monday Review |
On a historical weekend for Ulster oval racing, a feast of entertainment was served up around the Nuttscorner circuit as OvalRacingNI, an amalgamation of the three Ulster promotions, staged MayDay Ovalfest over the Bank Holiday weekend. 10 different formulae competed in 30 races across the weekend, with each and every victory being hard-earned.
Although Monday was much cooler, it was luckily without the downpour which had dampened Sunday’s proceedings. The 2.0 Hot Rods again arrived in strength, and with new grading in effect some new winners were dished up. Once again they were all from the blue grade, with Davy Clarke and Wayne McClure sharing the heats before young Derek Martin showed the rest a clean pair of heels to take the flag in the final ahead of Garry Campbell. The BriSCA F2 Stock Cars were also in good form, and it was Gary Grattan and Gavin Fegan who shared the spoils in the heats, with Denver Grattan the man to the fore in the feature race after an exchange of blows with runner-up Craig McConnell.
The Stock Rods were present for yet another outing at Nuttscorner in 2010, having never raced there before Easter. Recent graduate from the Juniors Jonny Cardwell raced clear in heat one to record the win, before the second fell to rapid visitor Graham Nelson, all the way from Tipperary. There were plenty of penalties handed out in the final, with the majority of the top 5 across the line falling foul of the steward for some blatant contact. The one who wasn’t guilty was second over the line Micky McFall, and the Ballymena driver rightly inherited the Ovalfest cup. The ProStocks added some great entertainment to the programme, with Ryan Magee and Alan Haugh taking the wins in the heats after the on the road winners in both, Stephen McCready and Richard Harper respectively, were docked for jumping the start. The longer distance in the final, and a couple of caution periods, brought the star men right into play and it was Ryan Stewart who took the spoils ahead of Robert Preston and Ryan Abernethy. The Junior Productions rounded off the proceedings, with form man Kyle Hill taking first blood in heat one. Fionn Donnelly took his maiden victory in the second encounter, before Lee McCracken slid past Donnelly in the closing stages of the final to claim the silverware.
All in all it was a fine showcase of Northern Ireland oval racing over the two days, and hopefully one that will be repeated in years to come.
