Portadown ace Wayne Woolsey was the star turn at Tullyroan Oval in association with Spedeworth Motorsports on Easter Monday, as he romped to victory in a total of four races which included feature race wins in both the National Hot Rods and 2.0 Hot Rods. It was a tremendous start to the season for the venue, with record car counts and outstanding racing throughout the programme.

The elite formula of the short ovals, the National Hot Rods, were contesting the ninth round of their World Series, with qualification for the World Championship final uppermost in many minds. The entire afternoon was all about Wayne Woolsey though, as he cruised home to a treble of both heats and the final in his first home appearance in the class in a number of years. With 14 cars on track it was some of the best National Hot Rod racing seen in many years.
Although he had a favourable grid position, Wayne still had a job to do and he certainly did it in style! He relieved early pacesetter Will Scott of the lead in heat one, before taking the flag ahead of another Portadown driver, Andy Stewart. Heat two saw Scott again set the pace, before Woolsey once again surged through to the lead and the win once again. World Champion Glenn Bell was on a charge in this one, and he came through for a creditable second with Stewart in third this time. In the final, Woolsey again moved through to the lead in the early stages whilst the others argued amongst themselves. Wayne again pulled a healthy lead, only to see it whittled away as he got caught up in the backmarking battle between Mark Heatrick and Stewart Doak. As they entered the final lap both Andrew Murray and Keith Martin were on Woolsey’s case, but Wayne was always in control as he swept home to complete his hat-trick, and with it the early lead in the Cirrus Plastics Track Championship.

With well over 20 cars on track, ultra fast racing was the order of the day in the 2.0 Hot Rods with the evenly matched field putting on three excellent races. Wayne McClure moved ahead in the first heat, before a touch from Wayne Woolsey saw him end up in the wall and Woolsey take an early bath as the cause of the ensuing race suspension. That opened the door for Mark Madill, who raced home to victory ahead of Adam Hylands and Bobbie Johnston. Heat two saw a tremendous win for Dungannon’s Sean Dynes, who pulled off an excellent move to land the win. Davy Potter inherited second and Irish Champion Derek Martin third after Shane Murray was demoted two spots to fourth for contact. The final was another enthralling encounter, with no quarter asked and certainly none given amongst the pack. This time though it was all about Woolsey, as he stormed home to take his second final win of the afternoon – the first time any driver has doubled up with feature race wins in two classes at Tullyroan Oval. Madill and Murray were his placemen ahead of Hylands in fourth.

Martin O’Flaherty was the man to beat in the Lightning Rods on Easter Monday, as he steered his ex-Mervyn Emerson car to victory in both heat two and the final. Coleraine’s Dane Ferry drew first blood with a faultless display to win the opening heat in his immacualte machine, ahead of returnee Jason Devlin and Irish Champion Jordan Rochford. Heat two saw Ardglass man O’Flaherty take his first chequers of the afternoon ahead of Gary Beggs and Francie Allen, before the trio crossed the line in the same order after a hard fought feature race final.

The budget ProStocks as always entertained, and with a bumper 34 cars on track - including an impressive 17 novice grade drivers - the action and excitement came thick and fast. Local driver Allen Cherry took the spoils in the first encounter, withstanding a late race caution period to lead home Jack Gilpin and Stefan McClelland in a 3 lap dash to the chequered flag. The thrills and spills continued in heat two, and Aghadowey ace Robert McIlroy stormed through to take the flag ahead of Strabane’s Dean Fleming and Mark Corry. The final looked as though it would throw up one of the surprises of the day, as top lady racer Deborah McCann settled into the lead. It looked as though she might well hold on for a win that would have brought the house down, but McClelland had other ideas and the Irish and Irish Open Champ nipped past within sight of the flag to land the trophy. Steven Haugh grabbed second on the line, with McCann left to rue what might have been in third.

The young teenagers in the Junior Productions once again entertained the huge Bank Holiday crowd, and it was Kells lad Shane McMillan who drove a superb race to land the silverware in the final. In doing so he thwarted the treble bid by Bradley McKinstry, who had earlier taken both heat wins. In heat one McKinstry raced through from the back of the line up to lead home recent form man Jaimie McCurdy. In the second encounter it was McCurdy and Edmund Davis who pushed McKinstry hardest, but in the end it was Davis who had to settle for second spot after McCurdy was demoted to fourth for a jump start - a problem which is blighting the formula at present. In the final McMillan worked himself ahead from the blue grade, but soon had treble-seeker McKinstry in hot pursuit. For the final ten laps young Shane had to withstand constant pressure as Bradley looked for the gap, but he was able to hold out and take the honours by the slenderest of margins. McKinstry was a gallant runner up ahead of Graham Fegan in third.
