On a night of changing conditions at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday night, John Christie came through to land a double success in the latest National Hot Rods World Series round. The former European Champion took the chequered flag in both heat one and the final, with World Champion Glenn Bell taking the nights other victory in the McConnell Alloy Wheel Repairs sponsored meeting.
Dungannon’s Simon Kennedy set the pace in each of the races, but Christie was keen to make his favourable grid position count as he strives to make the qualification cut for the World Final in July. He soon went ahead in heat one, and led home Mark Heatrick and Bell to the chequered flag. In heat two, Bell and Adam Maxwell worked their way onto Christie’s tail as the laps dwindled down. Contact from Maxwell saw Bell cannon into Christie and shunt him wide, allowing the World Champ to nip ahead. As Bell won, Maxwell was docked from second for the contact, handing the podium slots to Andrew Murray and Stewart Doak.
Just prior to the final the heavens opened, and the drivers were allowed 5 minutes to change to wet tyres. Kennedy led for quite some time, before Christie swooped by to complete his double in style. Gary Woolsey and Doak had a battle royale for second which Woolsey just got the better of.
The Lightning Rods were contesting the opening round of their Greystone Joinery & Construction Ltd Challenge Series. Local driver Mark Taylor was the first to show with a convincing heat one win, leading home Francie Allen and Irish Champion Jordan Rochford at the line. Allen improved in heat two to take then win ahead of Gary Beggs and Dane Ferry. The closed grid final saw the highest points scorers on pole, and thus it was Allen who led them off on the rolling lap. Rochford had the bit between his teeth and slipped ahead from the outside of the front row at the green flag, but Allen soon got the better of him during the early skirmishes and retook the advantage. Francie never looked back, and rounded off a great night with the win and a new tyre as well as the trophy for his efforts. Rochford was a gallant runner up ahead of Ferry and David Hearst.

Big grids were again the order of the day in the ProStocks, with yet another field in the mid thirties. It’s great to see such a field of novice graders too, and it was one of them in Allen Cherry who led quite a way in heat one before Robert McIlroy stole through the carnage to grab the initiative and the win. Heat two came to a confusing end, when a late race 3-lap dash to the finish after a caution had seen Robbie Diffin seemingly take the flag. Confusion over the race leader at the suspension saw the officials being left with no option but to declare the result of the race at the earlier suspension once the discrepancy had been uncovered. Stephen Boyd thus inherited his first win in the formula with returnee and former Open Scottish Champion Andy McLeister second. The final was another blinding race, and when the silverware was at stake step forward the king of the scene at the moment, Stefan McClelland. The Irish and Irish Open Champion worked his way through to the lead, and was able to make his move entering the closing stages. Even a late race caution period couldn’t deter him as he sped home to yet another feature race victory. With the World Cup being staged at Tullyroan in September he is already installed as the hot favourite. British Champion Ryan Abernethy chased him home ahead of Davy Wright in third.
It was only the second ever meeting for the Superstox and for the second week in succession it was Gary Grattan who came through to take the victory spoils. For a time it seemed as though his sister-in-law Daisy Grattan might take a surprise win, but Gary was able to burst through nearing the end to steal the win. Kyle Beattie and Rab Stewart nipped through to fill out the podium. Earlier Gary had shared the heat wins with Aughnacloy’s Kyle Beattie, whilst Neil Davison was the latest recruit to debut in the class. The Superstox have made a very impressive start, and with new cars appearing at each meeting things can only get better.
Dean McCrory was the star of the Junior Productions on Saturday night, as the Antrim lad brought his new Nova home to a great feature race win. Jordan Robinson inherited victory in the opening heat of the night, after on the road winner Edmund Davis was docked for contact. The Steward had a part to play in heat two as well, as two of the eager youngsters were demoted this time handing the win to Ethan Dilly, with Graham Fegan and the docked Shane McMillan filling out the top three. In the final there was no stopping McCrory however, and he completed the win with ease and with it his third junior formula trophy of the week across the Ulster ovals. Davis and Fegan completed the top three

The new Ninja Kart class for 6-11 year olds stole the show at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday night, as the young drivers put on an absolutely fantastic display in front of yet another huge crowd. There were smiles all round, not only from the youngsters but some extremely proud parents too at the Fastenal sponsored meeting. The Superstox also made an impressive debut, whjilst there was drama aplenty in the other support classes too.
The Ninja Karts hugely anticipated first ever race was sponsored by NIOvalTV, and it was Portadown hotshot Jake Woolsey, son of former World Hot Rod Champion Wayne, who stormed through from the rear of the line up to take a superb win and get his name in the history books. They were dicing and darting all over the track in fine style, and Matthew Nicholl came through to take the second heat of the day ahead of Woolsey and Adam McFall. The final came down to a great scrap between Nicholl and McFall, with Adam just getting a run past his rival on the final lap to take the formula’s first ever feature race win by the smallest of margins. It was an absolutely stunning show from the young girls and boys, and with even more Karts due on track soon things will only get even better! Sixteen deserve the credit for being on track on their first ever meeting, and they each received a trophy for their efforts as well as an Easter Egg from our Ninja Karts sponsor for 2013, LM Paints.
The Superstox were also having their debut meeting, with the six cars in action looking well suited to the Tullyroan bowl. Aughnacloy’s Kyle Beattie grabbed both heat wins including the NIOvalTv sponsored first ever race prize. Kyle was out of luck in the final though, where Gary Grattan stormed through to grab the win ahead of Rab Stewart. Credit must go the Grattan Race Team, who fielded three cars on the night and carried out engine changes between races on two occasions – now that is real dedication to the sport!

The 2.0 Hot Rods were again present in large numbers and Portadown’s Mark Madill steered his Corsa home to the opening heat win ahead of Wayne Woolsey and Wayne McClure. Heat two saw a huge accident when Stephen Best found himself stranded facing the oncoming traffic at the entrance to the home straight. The yellows went out as soon as possible, but couldn’t prevent the main pack from collecting him which left Davy McMenemy and Derek Martin amongst others with considerable damage. On the restart Adam Hylands led them home, but a penalty for contact earlier in the race saw him demoted to third leaving former Lightning Rods star man Stephen Emerson to inherit his first ever win in the class.
In the final European and British Champion Shane Murray soon worked his way through to the head of the field, but with Hylands right on his case on his rear bumper. Murray refused to obey the blue flags as we entered the final stages, but contact from Hylands on the #70 car allowed Adam through to the lead. Murray then came back with interest into the next turn, and all this coupled with their antics after the race towards one another saw the Race Control officials get involved. The outcome saw both get demoted in the final analysis, handing the final win to a delighted Emerson who has announced his arrival in the class in no uncertain terms.
The Stock Rods were making their first appearance as a fully fledged Tullyroan Oval formula, and Lee Johnston had a great night as he took a heat and final double in his Nova. Colin McNiece was the other heat winner, whilst the final turned into an almighty scrap for the lead. Johnston was ahead of Jonny Cardwell, before allowing his young rival down the inside and ahead with only a lap to go. Johnston somehow found a gap back down Cardwell’s inside on the final turn, and succeeded in winning the drag race to the line in a sensational finish.
The Junior Productions completed the line up, and unfortunately their racing was somewhat overshadowed by an incident during the final involving star men Bradley McKinstry and Jaimie McCurdy. Both were loaded up and removed from all the night’s results as well as facing further disciplinary action. On track Belfast’s Graham Fegan took an excellent first ever win in heat one ahead of Shane McMillan. Shane then went on to grab victory in both heat two and the final, with Dan Campbell chasing him home in the feature race. Fegan was third over the line and received the top white/yellow grade award from sponsors Fastenal.

All drivers are reminded that all cars must carry a roof fin/high level number on their race cars at all times.
Over the winter period and again on Easter Monday, a number of cars were noticed either not carrying these or with the number written in such a way that it was difficult for our lap scorers to read. Numbers should be clearly visible, with black numbers on a white background and preferably in a desirable font.
All formulae where transponders are compulsory should have these working at all times. |
